Bird Watching in Nepal
Photography Tour
Nepal's Biodiversity
Nepal is Bird Watcher's Paradise with 873 species (10% of the world's total bird's species) of birds. The corresponding altitude and habitat in the five physiographic zones including special sites such as Mai Valley, Rara Ringmo finger and western Terai contributed to the bird species richness in Nepal. Kali Gandaki Valley lies in the cross road of bird distribution. It is the culminating point for the distribution of Eastern species such as blood pheasant and western species e.g. Cheer pheasant. Pokhara valley and the surrounding is where all the eight vulture species occurring in Nepal are found.

The famous bird watching sites of Nepal are Shivapuri and Phulchowki hills surrounding Kathmandu, Pokhara and Modi Valley of Annapurna Sanctuary, Langtang Valley, Arun Basin, Royal Chitwan National Park, Bardia, Shukla and the wetlands of Koshi Tappu, and Jomsom.

Birding in Kathmandu Valley
500 different species are available on only in Kathmadnu valley and its surroundings. The surrounding hills offer a varied ecology ranging from primary and secondary forests to rhododendrons, oak and pine forests. In addition, the wetlands and open fields inside the valley make up a diverse habitat for many species of birds

The most popular bird watcing spot is the Phulchoki hill, the highest peak on the valley rim situated 20 km southeast of Kathamandu, with some 265 species recorded till date. The birds spotted here include babblers, wabblers, tits, thrushes, minivets, woodpeckers, eagles and many migrant birds. Godavari Botanical Garden, at the base of Phulchoki Hill itself records more than 100 species of birds including the lesser racket-tailed drongo, Tibetan siskin and the spotted forktail.

Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve , situated 11 km to the north of Kathmandu, is another exciting location. Nagarjuna Forest , 5 km from Kathmandu on the way to Kakani from Balaju. Blue magpies, kalij pheasants, Bonelli;s eagles, Great Himalayan barbets and other exotic birds.
As for the wetlands in the valley, the banks of Manohara river on the way to Bhaktapur, and the Bagmati River, which flows into the valley from Shivapuri Hll and out through Chobhar Gorge, are good places for watching waders and waterfowls. Harboring 40 species of birds mostly dependent on wetlands, Taudaha, a lake on the way to Dakhsinkali, attracts flocks of migrant birds.

Chitwan National Park
It is located in the sub-tropical lowlands and consists of sal forests, tall grasslands, hills, oxbowlkaes and flood plains. Ornithologists have recorded more than 525 different species residential and migratory of birds in Chitwan National Park, including Bengal Florican, Giant Horn Bill, King fishers, Wabblers, Peacock, Babblers, magpies, forktails etc. Drive 5 hours or flight 25 minutes followed by 30 minutes drive.
