Gurukul Theatre or Aarohan Theatre
Group
You'll find it in between of Maiti
Devi and old Baneshwor. Its easy to find. .
You can reach it by tuk tuk and by Bus. .
We are interested theatre fans but didn't have a
chance to visit any theatre up to recently when we
discovered this place. When somebody mentioned the
name Gurukul, our faces went blank and "What
is Gurukul?" was our first question.
Then our interest started so we went there. Outside
it's not exactly luxury but inside the theatre it's
quite okay and the lighting system has what it needs
to get a good impression..
Mrs Nisha and Mr Basanta are what one would call theatre
freaks spending their last paisa to get high quality
theatre going and this since 20 years when they first
cooperated with the nowadays Alliance Francaise.
After the connection with Alliance Francaise ended
they got some friends in Norway and Denmark who help
them to travel abroad and to show their theatre there.
An encouragement to keep on high quality theatre.
Besides of awakening in educated Nepali the taste
of theatre its activities also include the presentation
of street theatre in rural areas on topics interesting
there and in those regions they became famous for
pioneering the theatre of the oppressed. Mind you
they were also on the streets in Kathmandu when the
democracy movement started in 1989.
Besides of playing theatre they also offer training
and workshops through out the country and are networking
with local community theatre groups where ever they
do exist. One worry they seem to have always, that
is the price of gold. Why? Because when money is scarce
Nisha has to bring her gold to the bank and then you
have to know. Luckily enough she was always able to
get it back. Not least because sometimes even the
municipality helps to some extend.
Interestingly they have Inter-art collaborations with
painters, musicians, writers and poets
The theatre team performed in India, Bangladesh, Denmark,
Russia, Korea and Norway successfully as the actors
are very dedicated and have what is needed from the
gods. Dedication like their teachers they have to
have for such a profession.
Gurukul theatre school offer education for acting
theatre lovers and old students are the source of
new players. It's pretty good what they are learning
because not only experience from Norway and Denmark
comes in but also the experience of theatre training
from India which the principals got many years ago.
