Private equity
funds coming to India.
There is money to be made between 1999 and 2001 an
American equity fund invested $292mio in Bharti Tele
ventures an Indian firm riding on the tidal wave of
mobile telephone. Just last month this company sold
part of his investment for $1bn and the rest of its
stake is worth $700mio. For an investment of around
$300mio a dreamy return. as deals in Europe an America
become competitive, India along with China has become
a global private equity new fronter. Private equity
firms are also buying out existing foreign investments.
Meanwhile Indian private equity firms have been created
as India offers a unique combination of size fast
growing businesses and reasonably robust public markets
for exit. American giants are on the prowl. With billions
of US$ allocated for investment in the country. Seven
or eight funds are at present raising money for India.
This arrival of equity funds is a second coming. In
the late 90's venture capitalists rushed in to finance
information technology start ups. This time it is
much concentrated on private investment in public
equity, means in companies already listed on the stock
markets.
Some company needed prefer private equity investments
to sock market listings, as private equity firms have
more patience, typically looking for an exit within
five to seven years. Compare with europe and America,
India can still be seem as an empty playing field
with much chance to grow.
