Shyam was born in December 1952. His father was
a successful businessman in Western Nepal where
he learned early enough the business approach and
to become successful. Until 14 he was a lucky guy
growing up in a well to do family with loving parents
and a stable full of brothers and sisters. But then
the father died when he was 14 and slowly cash become
a topic. So with 18 he left his studies and started
his own business. His protest against old meaningless
rules of the then society helped him to a good start.
He started with a small grocery and little money.
In this grocery he offered luxury goods targeting
high value customers. But this business wasn't too
exciting for him. When he got the chance he dropped
and started in 1973 with a small Restaurant for
tourists. As a dynamic entrepreneur he was never
satisfied with what he had and soon started more
and bigger restaurants in the valley. His flexibility
showed when tourists started to come less. How?
Well he discovered the Nepali family and made his
restaurants family friendly with e.g.corners for
children, changes in the menu, introduction of cyber,
music and films in a new ambiente.
What other activities
did he develop?
Around 25 years ago a good bread was difficult to
get and he smelt an opportunity. Being able to put
his hands on machinery imported for two bakeries
as donation from the French government he installed
two bread factories, in Kathmandu and Butwal. Even
though at that time the bakery business was lucrative
his energy was concentrated on expanding the "Nanglo
Bakery" restaurant chain.
Two chances weren't enough for him. When his children
grew bigger he looked for a good school for them
in Kathmandu, but there was a dearth of good schools.
Again luck was on his side. Private schools being
allowed shortly before, he started Suvatara in 1989.
This was a good opportunity not only to make money
(and much of it) but also to get his wife in an
activity, which she liked very much. So building
up the school was practical from all angles. His
wife getting interesting activities, he getting
the opportunity to help his wife on the commercial
side and his children getting a good school.
When asked about the ethics of business he stressed
the importance of delivering good quality at good
prices. and reliability. His guiding principal is
"Nanglo" means indefinite and fast growth.
So it is no wonder that he acquired a second school
Lamatar, which was an excellent move, as he could
get a running school at damned favorite terms. So
another principal of his ethics seems to be "Take
your chance where and whenever it arrives."
Another point where he has to be special is time
management, as otherwise he cannot manage all his
tasks.
Where does he look for
future growth?
His main interest lies in the school sector in which
he now spends half of his time and he also likes
to tell youngsters how to built up their businesses.
While he didn't say this expressively we wouldn't
be surprised if his next move would lead in the
direction of a management school
What does he think of today's market chances? According
to him it was earlier easy to enter a market as
most economic areas where uncovered, but now there
are few areas left without heavy competition. He
stresses the importance of corporate culture, as
he believes that there is no shortcut to be successful
but to build up a brand name and keep it.
Where did he get most of his education from? He
is also in learning a self made man. He used to
read books and magazines after he had to leave university
to learn what others have thought on business But
even more important for him was his travelling experience
and there most when he first went to US in 1975.
This was for him a unique chance to learn everything
about restaurants as he worked even though only
short time in different kinds of restaurants. Thus
learning how these guys were doing the job. He didn't
mind to work as a helper or a dish washer as long
as he could learn something. Again his practicability
helped him. 1975 was not the only travel but still
today he goes out at least twice a year looking
for chances to expand his know how.
What is his attitude towards staff? He doesn't pay
too much and the facilities offered are limited.
He also doesn't spend too much money for training
only when it is an absolute must. .
Then why are the people loyal to him? It is the
career. He chooses all his top people from inside
and anyone who is ambitious can get the chances,
even if he or she start at low positions. Even when
he was in the beginning he could convince his staff
that
"Nanglo" meant
future carrier growth
What are his family values? As far as kids are concerned
he follows the motto " let chicken go where
they want to go " and he encourages them to
put questions and be rebellious in thinking. As
far as his wife is concerned he likes to support
her by leaving her as much leeway as possible and
encouraging her to live her potential by at the
same time showing her his importance. While he leaves
his children very free he his wife and the kids
are spending every year holidays together keeping
the family intact.
What is his opinion on the senior citizen market?
According to him this has the potential to become
a booming market, as families are falling apart
and remittances are substituting earlier direct
support. These remittances are increasing the buying
power and thus will lead to an interesting market
according to him.
Well thanks Shyam, it was a nice time together.
What can be learned out of it?
Sometimes learning
from the parents can be helpful
To keep your family intact is very important for
business success.
If you are married try always to involve your wife
/ husband, but see to it that responsibilities are
clearly separated. Mix up kills.
If you are strong and ready to learn any time you
can be successful also without a full academic study.
With a creative mind you can start business early
with little money
Leave a business when it starts to bore you
Ask yourself always what could be in demand
In business you have to be always flexible and able
to adopt to new developments
It's always good to stand on in business (not only
)at least on two legs
Don't hesitate to take your chance
Laxmi is very important, as without luck you will
not succeed and this means humbleness and gratitude.towards
others.
To deliver good quality products or services against
good prices is important.
Take chances without hesitation they seldom come
back.
While strategic thinking and planning is important,
never forget to keep your eyes open for new social
and economic developments.
To become successful to built up brand names is
important
To become successful travel and expanding know how
through travelling is important. Don't mind how
you learn.
Make your staff believe in you and your company,
than you get the needed loyalty.
