Success Stories in Nepal
A typical lion

Rabi born in August 1972 is a typical lion. He likes people around him for whom he can care. His father a university professor, was a full blood democrat as he was convinced that only the democracy helps people to develop their own potential. Following his believe in the importance of developing human capacity he was also keen to get good education for his children
Rabi a St Xavier product got after his SLC the chance to go to Canada with the help of a scholarship, where he met a lot of students from a lot of countries opening his horizon for the world. After finishing his college he used his chance to receive one more year as trainee. It seems luck was with him as thereafter he could go to Boston, US where he received a few years later his Master of Electrical Engineering His results allowed him to stay 3 more years in the US, where he focused on hardware engineering. But as soon as he had learned enough he returned to Nepal and created his business beginning 2001 in Kathmandu
He started his business focusing on outsourcing works for Software development. He started by reactivating some contacts to friends in US. As market success depends from mouth to mouth recommendation he had some difficult time as in the beginning he had nothing to show. and his earlier hardware orientation didn't help too much. Still he was pushing hard and in 2000 the sky started to look for him promising but then came 9.11 and with many Software development projects on hold everything went down the drain. But he didn't give up. After two very difficult years he reached in 04 his Break Even Point.
Yes success means sometimes simply surviving in a very difficult surrounding and creating the basis for future growth. In the meantime as things look better he started to increase his professional staff.
Rabi is dreamer and realist at the same time. His realism has helped him to survive, and now his vision may be the ground on which to built the future. One of his ideas is to create an alliance of Software developers in Nepal , which he tried earlier to create but without the desired results.
Why is he interested in the forming of an alliance in Nepal you may ask? Well he sees in an alliance the chance to form an attractive market for outsourcing, a possibility to train more programmers with outsourcing experience and project management with the help of foreign experts and in forming standards for outsourcing work. All valid reasons.
According to him for successful participation in the outsourcing market improvements in infrastructure are needed. Nepal has up to now contrary to other countries no VOIP, there is not switching possibility, ISPs face many problems and Nepal Telecom Corp is a state owned monopoly not interested in creating its own competition. Despite these hindrances things can work. International outsourcers like Nepal, as many Nepali have been educated in US.
How does he see the future? Well he is still optimistic even though one of the problems for him is, that there is a lot of talk in Nepal, but the implementing is lacking.
Nepal's landlocked he sees actually as a strong opportunity as the two super powers in the North and the South are growing fast. which should help Nepal's economy. The outsourcer market will be also in future be influenced by small and medium sized companies. And his preferred target are the SME's in US, Europe and UK. In addition more skills might be available in future due to people returning from other countries.
How does he handle his staff?
He trains his staff mainly in house and doesn’t have too many problems up to now with good programmers. Still if outsourcing expands as he hopes for he will have to face stronger competition for good programmers. In the meantime he developed a stock option plan, which allows the staff to participate in the results of the company. He likes if his staff is courageous enough to express their opinion frankly which he believes is important for the success of any company. But he faces as others a problem as few people here in Nepal are trained in critical thinking.
In software development fast staff turnover is normal so some companies use bonds. He doesn't believe in it. If someone wants to go he lets him/her go, provided information is given in time. If people want to go to US he even supports them. Now everyone wants to go to US? Not really. He pays salaries, which allow them living standards comparable to US.
For him it's essential to give his staff the opportunity to grow and encouragement to freethinking is the key for that. When he hired his staff he stressed not the importance of experience but the ability and willingness to learn. For a leader he believes it is trust which has to be built up so that he can succeed. Working time should be flexible but hard working and overtime are a must. Without seeing the company's activities as a common goal success can't be reached.
As far as family is concerned he lives for the time being the life of a dedicated bachelor. So ladies if you read this look for your chance. He is a nice guy with a lot of vision and if you see him you probably will like him..
As far as the senior citizen market in Nepal is concerned he feels that the introduction of an efficient support system should have priority. In his opinion there is a crisis in Nepal's family system as only few children, which have gone out are coming back. And calling the parents to their children? Well this is also difficult as the social network systems are often very different. Thus elder people will have difficulties in adjusting to new surroundings.
As offerings for senior citizens he feels that talking programs, intellectually stimulating activities, sister hoods/ brother hoods, apartment houses connected with health care services could be interesting. Problems he sees derive from the existing caste system in Nepal. which might make a living of togetherness difficult.

What can we learn out of it?
Good education is important to develop one's potential. But important is not learning by heart alone, but learning to get an independent thinking potential
Meeting a early as possible students from other countries helps you to open your horizon of the world
In business often unexpected things happen. so learning the skill of survival and follow up is a must for success.
In Business contact with reality is a must, but vision is what brings you really forward.
Never call for government help, your success lies in your ability to do it yourself.
Don't believe that Nepal is in a difficult location. It's location between two superpowers can make it indeed strong
Encourage your staff to say their personal opinion on business matters. It helps!
For the selection of staff don't concentrate on their existing experience, but on their ability to learn and learn fast.
Train and enable the staff to see the company's targets as their own
According to him the senior citizen market in Nepal seems to get more and more attractive.
