Success Stories in Nepal
Ongoing innovative personality

The pioneer of fashion with an ongoing innovative personality Gyani Shova Tuladhar was born in May 1951 in a modest family in which education wasn’t exactly facilitated. She personally felt that education is very much helpful to advance and started her study even though late. With high ambition she could jump classes and completed her SLC early. Her success in SLC encouraged her to go for a full-fledged study of BA.
Unfortunately she failed in English but this turned out to be a chance. As she didn’t want to lose a full year by doing nothing she was looking out and met Baba Tulsi whom gave her the opportunity to come to Mumbai where her life changed. She learned the basic tools of her profession in a renowned Institute where she finished with merits.
When she came back from Mumbai she was slightly confused, if teaching or producing was her destination. While she was offered to teach in the campus she wanted to make also more Nepali women independent and by teaching in the campus this wasn’t possible as the campus program was based on learning by heart. So she didn't go for the campus.

On the one side she was inspired by her first customer to do practical tailoring and luck was with her. At the same time she started to teach tailoring in daytime in the ashram of her Baba where she worked for three years. Her students during this time came from all classes.

Parallel to teaching she also tailored the clothes of neighbors. In the beginning she had only a small shop in her house with just one machine. As her work was attracting customers she got more and more work. She succeeded because the satisfaction of customers was one of her main concerns and she handled everyone in the same way.
With increasing success she started to have her own real shop in 1971.

Two ingredients contributing to her success were her desire to be different and the creativity derived from the inability of her parents to buy her more then one cloth during Dashain times which made it necessary for her to use her creativity to look always good. This creativity helped her to develop her business and a few years after opening her first shop she could expand for another shop. Thereafter-new shops followed fast.
In 1889 she got seriously sick and she started to rethink her business. After a recovery, which took quite some time she envisioned to create a fashion institute, which was established by 1995 with just 3 teachers. In the meantime the institute has 22 teachers with 43 students. Asked what differentiates her institute from others she stresses that her strength lies in her ability to develop creativity in her students rather than let them imitate Indian respective European fashion styles.

Her thoughts are still with the future. First in her mind is the creation of a big fashion house with students from her own institute. The next step will be the installation of a research center, which will look at the rich folklore culture of Nepal, not yet used at all in the fashion world. But this
still not enough for her as she intends to create a fashion University.
Her staff counts now around 80. Her basic approach to staff is that they are allowed to leave anytime when they want to and take their knowledge with them. She doesn't play with the safety belt of bonds or similar things. On the other hand she just recently introduced a profit sharing system and she follows a pattern where loyalty is paid with chances of career. She also tries to give her staff the feeling of being cared for. While her kids are helping her, her hard working style left marks on her health. Even though she stays tough on course.

What can be learnt out of it?

==To be successful it is helpful to be pioneer in your sector and to stay innovative.
