Dr. R.R. Koirala M.D. (Ay) the gentleman we are looking
for was born in 20.08, 1957 in Kirinche, Lamjung.
He has become one of the most successful people in
his field of Ayurveda in Nepal and definitely belongs
to the more known practitioners worldwide.
His father was a famous tantrik healer, experienced
in tantrik he managed to produce six sons, out of
which RR was the fourth one. At the age of four his
father passed away and six-year later also his mother.
Despite this unfortunate event he and his brothers
were lucky enough to get a substitute mother, which
was very loving to them and could help them to overcome
their loss.
He loved going to school, despite the school in his
first years was far from home a full 4 hours daily
walk.
When he was 10, his relatives moved to Nawalparasi,
where R.R. and two of his brothers not only went to
school but also started farming. The income from farming
supported them to finance their study.
In 1974, after he had finished his S.L.C. he became
accountant in a cooperative.
After having worked there for 3 years he met a doctor
who encouraged him to go for medical studies. He started
even though there were financial bottlenecks. But
again Laxmi was with him. After six month he got a
scholarship which was enough to get him through to
the final exams.
In 1980, he finished his Certificate Level in Traditional
and General Medicine. Than he joined government job
and worked for 3 years. At that time government service
was something special. After that he got scholarship
for higher study for five and half year and completed
(1988) Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery from
Jiwaji University India. There he could visit quite
a few ashrams and learned all what is interesting
in alternative medicine. Then he continued his government
office where he stayed for many years. He went to
Jumla to work at the Zonal Ayurvedic Dispensary for
some time. So government employment made it possible
for him to go on with his studies and research work.
In 1985 he married and got two sons out of it, one
of which has now reached intermediate level and according
to his father targets to study medicine.
In 1990, he decided to go for further study and did
Doctor of Medicine in Ayurveda (M.D.Ay.). He got a
chance to study in Benaras, India with scholarship
from the Swiss government. In addition he had very
good professors which encouraged him to go on with
his research work. He completed his study in 1993
and continued his government job in Central Ayurveda
Hospital, Naradevi, Kathmandu.
He was invited to the Germany and build up relations.
And again in 1994, he was invited to Japan to hold
lectures on his research activities and his Japanese
counterparts tried to convince him to make his PhD
there. But he preferred to come back to Nepal.
Late 1993 he joined hands with a very good Indian
doctor who helped to start him his own clinical activities.
Now since 1998, this fellow is looking Ayurveda centre
in Italy.
In 1994, under World Health Organization scholarship
award he got chance to stay three months in Gujrat,
India his research work further strengthened, which
allowed him to build up his connections to Italy.
In 1995, his international connections
to Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Singapore,
Austria and Japan allowed him to start seriously to
develop his own clinic. Since than he is traveling
many countries, universities or institutions for seminars,
workshops, consultations and research work and he
holds good position in his work. At the same time
he could also intensify his own experience in cooperation
with a Nepali professor staying in India. For his
international connections it was also helpful to work
in short term projects with Swiss and French government
agencies
From 1995 to 2000, he, and his brother built up his
Ayurvedic Health Home. During this time a German Lady
having long and higher experience in health field
particularly nursing and also interested in holistic
medicine came to Nepal to join hands with him. Than
he with his brother and the German Lady strengthened
Ayurveda Health Home as a joint venture company. So,
you see by being open he got help and support from
everywhere.
While having made his decision to leave government
in 2003 it took him still two years more to translate
this into reality.
Now his clinic has 21 staff in average
and last year he had three thousand patients from
70 countries coming in his Ayurvedic Health Home (web:
www.ayurveda.com.np) Clinic in Tilingtar Dhapasi,
Kathmandu. An impressive result if you look at the
overall difficulties of this country.
In addition he treats everyday nearly 30 local people
out of which 10 more or less for free in his another
clinic in Putalisadak, running since 1993. From time
to time he offers free health camps as well. He provides
financial support victim afflicted children also.
Now days he is also president of the Ayurvedic doctors
association of Nepal.
His major income source is research at home, lecturing
abroad, and treatment of foreign patients.
While he has reached already a lot he still has ambitions.
Life is not over until it's over and until then growth
can go on. We wish him all the best for a successful
growth.
