It’s a
well-known name in the tourism and the social field
of Nepal,. He was born in 30th March 1943 in Kathmandu
and joined his brother and two sisters. His father
was a successful gold merchant of his time. While
his family wanted him in the gold business, he was
from the beginning more interested in the nature
of this country, especially its wildlife. For this
he was ready to give up a secure business career.
So in 1964, he passed B.Sc.from Tribhuwan University,
Kathmandu and three years later in 1967, he passed
his Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry from the Indian
forestry college at the university of Deheradun,
India.
After that, he joined as a wildlife conservation
officer at the Ministry of Forest in Kathmandu and
became in 1968 Instructor at Nepal Forest College,
Hetauda. One of his driving forces to join government
services was the possibility to travel in this function
and this he did.
He was the first wildlife officer in Nepal. Under
his guidance the nowadays famous Royal Chitwan National
Park was established. Here his training on Nature
Recreational Planning and Wildlife management from
USA. and Australia helped him a lot..
But if you are in bureaucracy its good to be a bureaucrat,
and this he was not. As he could not fulfil his
dreams in the field of the wild nature he left the
government job in 1970 and entered the world of
tourism in the same year with his first venture
Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel. This was his own
family home, and where can you start better to invite
guests, even though paying ones, than in your own
place. Still today he is proud that Kathmandu Guest
House became at some time the center of tourism
intellectualism, as many writers stayed there for
some time.
Seeing his success in tourism others followed.
It’s quite interesting, that genes really
play a role. He is the one in our success stories
who was born already with a golden spoon in his
mouth. So he didn’t become rich out of his
own.
But what’s interesting, he was open for new
areas and that’s important also. So he ended
up being one of the most successful hotel entrepreneurs
of Nepal.
Today the KGH Group of Hotels ,Resorts, Spa &
Travels which he founded own following:
==Kathmandu Guest House, Thamel , Kathmandu,
==Park Village Resort and Spa , Budhanilkantha,
Kathmandu
==Buddha Maya Garden , Lumbini
==Maruni Sanctuary Lodge , Sauraha, Chitwan
==Maya Manor Boutique Rooms and Nepal Nature.com
Naxal, Kathmandu
==Pokhara view Garden and Park Village Water Front
,Pokhara
==Samjana Travels and Tours , Thamel, Kathmandu
==Himalayan Adventure , New Delhi , India.
While this would be enough for others to sit down
he is an Aries and as such he obviously can’t.
But let’s just make a short jump.
At the age of 43, he lost his first
wife and daughter due to cancer within a very short
period, which must have given him the shock of his
life. At that time there was not a single oncologist
in Nepal , no treatment facilities and no radiotherapy
units.
But after the period of mourning this became another
challenge for him. He saw cancer as something to
be conquered. He launched a national campaign to
raise awareness against cancer and also to create
a surrounding which would be possible to treat cancer.
He started fundraising in a big extend, but this
was not enough to built a cancer hospital. So he
pushed forward to introduce a tax of one paisa on
every cigarette produced in Nepal and this together
with the money earlier raised was enough to arrive
at his dream to build a modern cancer hospital in
Nepal.
Now there are dozens of oncologists in Nepal, a
department of oncology in every major hospital,
and an ultra modern specialized cancer hospital
.
We have seen that our Hero is not
easily getting tired. So it’s not surprising
that he became member in a hell of a lot of social
organizations and in one means the Nepal Cancer
Relief Society he is still today president.
Being a tourism guy by heart it’s
not a surprise that he supported over many years
the development of tourism in this country, either
in his function as businessman or in his private
function as a tourism fan.
After having given everything of his
hotels to his children, he obviously felt bored
again. With friends he created NepalNature.com which
concentrates on the discovery of nature, which only
a few years ago created already this year made its
first profit. Really you may like him or not, he
is a very successful entrepreneur of this country
with a strong inclination to social responsibilities,
which itself have also to bring money. In addition
he is a full blown nationalist, who loves his country
more than any other one, For him Nepal is a country
with terrific chances to develop new things and
to give life sense.
