Yunnan
From ancient times on Yunnan has been
regarded as a place “beyond cloud” in
the mind of Chinese people. The mighty emperor Han
Wudi even was inspired by rosy cloud appearing over
this wonderland as early as 2,000 years ago and sighted
with emotion that it is too far to reach and too high
to subjugate. But the eventually was tempted to send
his envoy to discover her mystery. As one of China’s
last frontier, today, Yunnan region is ready to be
explored. Yunnan in the eyes of visitor’s view
presents a different picture from such traditional
tourist cities as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an,
Guilin. Her tribal people, winding ranges of mountain,
tranquil monasteries and subtropical jungles are destined
for one of China’s most attractive places. Situated
on the southwestern most part of China, Yunnan shares
its boarder with Myanmar to the west and Laos, Vietnam
to the south. The terrain of the province, with a
total area of 400,000 sq km, is rugged and mountainous
with the highest peak at 6,740m and average of 2,000m
Silk Road
is the collective name given to a number of trade
routes linking the Chinese and Roman Empire. The long
and winding Silk Road in northwest China has a history
of more than two thousand years. It opened up during
the reign of Emperor Han Wudi, who in 138 BC dispatched
Zhang Qian on a mission to seek an alliance with peoples
west of China against the northern tribes. This ancient
route starts from the old capitals of Luoyang and
X'ian, reaches the Yellow River at Lanzhou, follows
along the "Gansu Corridor" and stretches
along the edge of deserts and mountains.
Before the discovery of the sea route to the India,
the Silk Road had contributed greatly to the exchange
and development of ethical and material civilization
between the East and West. Its last great era was
in the time of Mongols. Macro Polo traveled from Kashgar
to the East of China along the southern route. However
its importance was lost quickly with the sea route
developed. in recent years, Chinese government built
the railway between Lanzhou and Urumqi. Another part
of this railway,Alma-Ata in Kazatchstan was completed
in 1992.
